Ayurveda Panchkarma

Ayurveda Panchkarma, a type of Ayurvedic management of disease, is the process that gets to the root cause of the problem and corrects the essential balance of 'Tridosha' in body. Pancha Karma is good for alleviating disease as well as a useful tool in maintaining excellent health. The term "Panchkarma" is a Sanskrit word which is made of two terms "Panch" and "Karma".

The term "Panch" means five and the term "Karma" means action. In this way, Panchkarma means five actions or five treatments.

Panchkarma therapy consists of five types of therapies known as "Panchkarma Chikitsa". They are Vaman (Induced vomiting), Basti (Medicated enema), Nasya (Nasal medicine), Virechan (Induced purgation) and Rakta Mokshan (Artificial bloodletting).

Vamana
Vamana, an emesis therapy, is used to remove Kapha toxins collected in the body and the respiratory tract. This is offered to people with high Kapha imbalance. This type of ayurveda panchkarma treatment involves loosening and mobilizing the toxins in an effort to finally eliminate them.

Virechana (Purgation)
Virechana is a type of ayurveda panchkarma therapy used to remove Pitta toxins from the body that are accumulated in the liver and gallbladder, it completely cleanses the gastro-intestinal tract.

Basti (Enema or Colonic Irrigation)
Basti (Enema) is regarded as the mother of all ayurveda panchakarma treatments because it cleanses the accumulated toxins from all the 3 doshas, Vata, Pitta and Kapha, through the colon.

Nasya (Nose Cleaning)
Nasya as an ayurveda panchkarma treatment involves administration of medicated oil through the nose to cleanse accumulated Kapha toxins from the head and neck region. Based on the medical condition of a person, it can be offered for 30 days.

Raktamokshana
Raktamokshana, one of ayurveda panchkarma therapies, is a procedure to cleanse the blood and is advised only in very rare conditions. It is unwise during general Panchakarma.
